Photo Overview

A large group of soldiers are depicted aboard a ship, likely during World War I. The soldiers, dressed in naval and military uniforms, are gathered on the deck, with the ship's large smokestacks in the background. This scene likely captures a moment of camaraderie and anticipation, as these American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) soldiers are either departing or returning from Europe. The setting appears to be aboard a transport ship, possibly docked or en route.

During World War I, the American Expeditionary Forces played a critical role in supporting the Allies in Europe. Led by General John J. Pershing, the AEF were integral in significant battles, including the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which contributed to the eventual end of the war. Transport ships were the primary method for moving troops across the Atlantic, often carrying thousands of soldiers at a time in challenging conditions.
