Antique Japanese Woodblock Print Frog in the Rain by Koho Shoda Shin-Hanga Framed c.1930s

Presented is a beautiful Japanese tanzaku-size woodblock print created in 1930 by the artist Koho Shoda,.
ca. 1871-1946) a renowned Japanese artist associated with the shin-hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan during the early 20th century. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature.

This very elegant and understated print depicts a frog siiting under a tall plant apparently waiting for the rain to stop. There is a subtle beauty and sadness in this work, made with pastel colors in a tall narrow format called ko-tanzaku.

Tanzaku or "poem slip" prints are narrow, vertical format woodblocks with a printed verse or a space to write a poem, designed to fit on a wooden pillar or post. This traditional Japanese form dates back hundreds of years, and is still in use today. The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in the 1930s and printed in the 1930s - the Koho Shoda lifetime print. It is framed in a vintage wooden frame.
The print was made as part of the series "Japanese scenes in Tanzaku" published by Hasegawa/Nishinomiya Publishing - the publishing house Shoda work with exclusively.
