John Francis Dodge (born 1864) and Horace Elgin Dodge (born 1868) were machinists from Niles, Michigan, who founded the Dodge Brothers Company in Detroit in 1900. After initially manufacturing bicycle parts, they became the exclusive supplier for Henry Ford starting in 1903, earning a 10% stake in Ford Motor Company through stock payments.
In 1913, the brothers left Ford to establish the Dodge Brothers Motor Company, launching their first vehicle, the Model 30, in 1914. This car featured innovations like an all-steel body and a 12-volt electrical system, quickly making Dodge the second-largest automaker in the U.S. by 1919. The brothers sold their Ford shares for $25 million in 1919 but tragically both died in 1920 from influenza complications. The company was eventually acquired by Chrysler in 1928.
