Kiss is an American rock band formed in '73 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss & Ace Frehley. Known for face paint & stage outfits, they rose to prominence in the '70s with elaborate live performances featuring fire breathing, blood-spitting, smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits & pyrotechnics. They have gone through lineup changes, with Stanley & Simmons the only members in every one. The original & best-known lineup consists of Stanley (vocals & rhythm guitar), Simmons (vocals & bass), Frehley (lead guitar & vocals) & Criss (drums & vocals). With make-up & costumes, they took on the personae of characters: Starchild (Stanley), Demon (Simmons), Spaceman/Space Ace (Frehley) & Catman (Criss). Due to creative differences, Criss & Frehley left by '82. In '83, Kiss began performing without makeup & costumes, marking the band's "unmasked" era lasting over a decade. Their music videos received regular MTV airplay. Eric Carr (who replaced Criss in '80) died in '91 of cancer & was replaced by Eric Singer. A wave of Kiss nostalgia in the mid-90s, led the original lineup to re-united in '96 with the return of makeup & costumes. The resulting Alive/Worldwide Tour grossed US$150 million, making it their most successful tour. Criss & Frehley subsequently left the band again, replaced by Singer & Tommy Thayer using the original Catman & Spaceman makeup. Kiss embarked on its final tour, the End of the Road World Tour, in 2019. Kiss is 1 of the best-selling bands of all time, with over 75 million records sold & are America's #1 Gold Record award-winning band of all time, with 30 Gold albums. Kiss has 14 Platinum albums (3 are multi-Platinum). In 2014, the 4 original members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Kiss was ranked by MTV as the 9th Greatest Metal Band of All Time, placed 10th on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock list & ranked as the 3rd Best Metal & Hard Rock Live Band of All Time by Loudwire.
