The award medal was established on May 12, 1883 by order of Emperor Alexander III. On June 3, 1883, the design of the medal was approved by the Emperor.

According to the order of Emperor Alexander III, the medal was awarded to all persons who took part in the preparation, organization and protection of the coronation celebrations.

At the St. Petersburg mint, 112,000 copper medals were minted to be attached to the Alexander ribbon.
