Songye "Nkisi" (plural Mankishi) Power Figure from the Democratic Republic of the Congo 

These objects are considered highly charged spiritual vessels used to communicate with the spirits of the dead and are employed in "magical" rites for protection or the well-being of a community. These figures are traditionally created by carvers and ritual practitioners to serve as protective objects for a community or an individual. 

Key Characteristics & Origins

The Songye (or Songe) are a Bantu ethnic group inhabiting a vast territory in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Known for their distinctive artistic traditions and complex social structures, they reside primarily between the Sankuru/Lubilash and Lualaba Rivers.

The Songye people are divided into approximately 35 subgroups or conglomerate societies.
