Songye "Nkisi" (plural Mankishi) Power Figure from the Democratic Republic of the Congo 

These objects are considered highly charged spiritual vessels used to communicate with the spirits of the dead and are employed in "magical" rites for protection or the well-being of a community. These figures are traditionally created by carvers and ritual practitioners to serve as protective objects for a community or an individual. 

Key Characteristics & Origins

• Cultural Group: Primarily attributed to the Songye (or Basongye) people, though similar stylized forms are found among the Baule (Ivory Coast) and Mende (Sierra Leone).
• Physical Features: Characteristic features of this style include a long, ringed neck, a large domed forehead, and a stylized posture with hands often resting on the abdomen.
• Materials: Typically carved from wood and frequently adorned with spiritually-charged materials like beads, metal tacks (copper or brass), and sometimes horn or textiles

The Songye (or Songe) are a Bantu ethnic group inhabiting a vast territory in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Known for their distinctive artistic traditions and complex social structures, they reside primarily between the Sankuru/Lubilash and Lualaba Rivers. 

Society and Governance

The Songye people are divided into approximately 35 subgroups or conglomerate societies.

• Political Structure: Each society is typically led by a central paramount chief, known as the Yakitenge, who is assisted by a judicial council of elders and nobles called bilolo.
• Social Order: Influential secret societies, most notably the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe, play a critical role in maintaining social order, conducting initiations, and enforcing communal norms.

Economy and Livelihood

• Primary Activities: They are traditionally a farming and hunting community. Major crops include cassava, maize, millet, and rice.
• Craftsmanship: The Songye are renowned as superior craftsmen. Men traditionally handle wood carving, metalworking, and weaving, while women produce highly regarded pottery.
• River Beliefs: Interestingly, fishing was historically rare and practiced only in times of dire need because rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs often buried there.

Spiritual Beliefs and Art

Songye spirituality is characterized by a belief in a creator god named Efile, though direct sacrifices are instead made to familial ancestors to ensure prosperity and protection.

• Mankishi (Power Figures): These are central to Songye spiritual life. Created by ritual specialists (banganga), these figures act as conduits for benevolent spirits to bring health, fertility, and protection to families and the community.
• Kifwebe Masks: Known for their striking striated (lined) patterns, these masks are used by secret societies in rituals to identify sorcery, implement laws, and perform theatrical dances. Male masks often feature a prominent raised crest, while female versions are typically white and have flatter profiles
