Nymphaea caerulea is the Latin name for the blue lotus (blue water lilies).
A perennial aquatic rhizomatous plant.
The leaves are large, up to 40 cm in diameter.
The flowers are large, 15-20 cm in diameter, blue, with a characteristic sweet smell. They rise on long pedicels above the surface of the water.
The calyx of the flower is four-membered. The sepals are green on the outside, white or pale blue on the inside. The numerous blue spirally arranged petals are slightly shorter than the sepals.
The flowers usually open in the evening and close early in the morning.
