An uncommon 1st edition of this very early work from Dame Muriel Spark (1918 - 2006), the influential Scottish author, writer, poet and essayist. She remains best known for her 1961 novel 'The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie ' which was memorably adapted into the 1969 movie for which Maggie Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

This is a detailed study of the life and career of the English author and editor Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797 - 1851), best known as being the writer of the early Gothic horror novel 'Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus ' in 1818 and as the wife and editor of the Romatic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Internally in near fine condition, no inscriptions or annotations, pages are clean and tidy, faint tan to front and rear pastedowns from the inner flaps of the dustjacket, 2 light spots to fore-edge of text block, short tear to bottom edge of rear endpaper where still attached rom production to final page of the index (see photo 14).

Externally in near fine condition, original orange publisher cloth titled in dark red to the spine, tightly and squarely bound with sharp corners, light rubbing to edges and corners, light pushing to spine ends.

Original card dustjacket, priced at 12/6 net, in overall very good condition, retains good colouring, some wear and chipping at the spine ends, light wear along bottom edge, top edge has an assortment of creasing and short closed tears; housed in a removable plastic protective sleeve.

** A very nice copy of this very early release from Muriel Spark. Her online bibliography indicates that this is her first release in her sole name, after a work the year before where she was co-editor. This came a year before her first poetry collection and 6 years before her first novel was published **
