Pereira. The film is a poignant coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of
Argentina's turbulent political history, specifically the military dictatorship
and the Falklands War.
Plot: The story follows a young shepherd boy, Verónico Cruz,
living in a remote village in the Jujuy province. His life is changed by his
relationship with a new schoolteacher, known as "el maestro," who
introduces him to the outside world.
Historical Context: The film traces the impact of the 1976
military coup and culminates with the Falklands War (1982). Verónico eventually
joins the navy and is presumed killed when the cruiser ARA General Belgrano is
sunk.
Origin: It is based on a non-fiction book by Fortunato
Ramos, a real-life rural teacher who also appears in the film as Verónico's
father.
The film received significant international acclaim for its
portrayal of indigenous culture and political history:
Berlin International Film Festival (1988): Won the Silver
Bear for outstanding artistic contribution and was nominated for the Golden
Bear.
