This very old and finely woven arm band comes from the Highlands of New Guinea and was part of a collection that was amassed prior to the turn of the 20th century by a sugar plantation located in Bundaberg that used labour from the Solomon Island and mainland New Guinea as early as 1870. It is made from tightly plaited natural fibres and richly stained in deep red ochre tones. The intricate herringbone weave demonstrates skilled handwork. Adorning one end is a cluster of small white nasa shells carefully attached to form a projection filled with woven material. It measures 11cm across and 4cm in height. Registered Post within Australia will cost $11.15AU. Standard Tracked Airmail to the US will be $22.30AU and anywhere in Europe $27.50AU.
