Rare Early "Candida" Sterling Silver Springbok Brooch by Joe Calafato
For your consideration is a beautiful, authentic piece of South African jewellery heritage. This sterling silver brooch was handcrafted by the renowned Pretoria-based goldsmith Joe Calafato under his famous "Candida" label.
Design & Significance:
The brooch features a masterfully detailed, leaping Springbok (South Africa’s national animal) positioned over a Protea flower (the national flower) and a rocky landscape. This motif is one of Calafato's most iconic early designs, celebrating the natural beauty of South Africa.
Key Historical Details:
Early Production: This piece features the original handmade "C" hook clasp (rather than a later mass-produced safety catch), identifying it as one of Calafato's earlier works, likely produced between 1947 and 1951.
Authenticity Marks: The reverse is clearly stamped with "CANDIDA" and "STER SILV".
Craftsmanship: Fine silverwork with beautiful 3D relief and stylized wirework accents typical of Calafato’s "uniquely South African" style.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition with a natural silver patina. The pin is straight and fits securely into the handmade C-clasp. (Please see photos for details).
