This sterling silver brooch was handcrafted by the renowned Pretoria-based goldsmith Joe Calafato under his famous "Candida" label. Design & Significance: The brooch features a masterfully detailed, leaping Springbok (South Africa’s national animal) positioned over a Protea flower (the national flower) and a rocky landscape. This motif is one of Calafato's most iconic early designs, celebrating the natural beauty of South Africa. Key Historical Details: Early Production: This piece features the original handmade "C" hook clasp (rather than a later mass-produced safety catch), identifying it as one of Calafato's earlier works, likely produced between 1947 and 1951. Authenticity Marks: The reverse is clearly stamped with "CANDIDA" and "STER SILV". Craftsmanship: Fine silverwork with beautiful 3D relief and stylized wirework accents typical of Calafato’s "uniquely South African" style.
