Rhodomyrtus tomentosa is a shrub or small evergreen tree of the Myrtaceae family. It is cultivated in some subtropical and tropical countries for the abundant ornamental flowers and edible fruits.
It is native to South and Southeast Asia, where the plant grows wild on sea coasts, in coastal forests, in moist rain forests far from the coasts, in swampy areas, up to an altitude of 2400 m above sea level.
Height — up to 4 m.
The leaves are stiff, opposite oval, with a pointed tip, glossy green on the upper surface and grayish or yellowish, slightly pubescent, on the lower. The length of the leaves is from 5 to 7 cm, the width is from 2 to 3.5 cm.
The flowers are single or collected in brushes of 2-3 pieces, 2-3 cm in diameter, with five petals, white, purplish pink or pink.
The fruit is round in shape, 10-15 mm in diameter, purple in color. The fruit contains a fleshy edible pulp with 40-45 small seeds.
The fragrance of the flowers is subtle, sweet, with subtle honey notes.
