Up for sale is a remarkably preserved copy of James Donnegan’s "A New Greek and English Lexicon," published in 1844 by Butler & Williams in Philadelphia. This "Revised and Enlarged" American edition, featuring the work of scholar R.B. Patton, was the gold standard for classical studies in U.S. universities during the mid-1800s.
Binding: Bound in its original brown calf leather. The spine features gold-stamped lettering / raised bands that presents beautifully on a library shelf.
Condition of Boards: The covers are loosely attached / showing some rubbing at the corners. The hinges are cracking but holding.
Interior: The text block is complete with 1413 pages. There is classic "foxing" (light brown spotting) and age-toning typical of 1840s American paper, which adds to its authentic antique character.
There is writing and scribble in the front cover. Some pages are dog-eared. Some are burnt.
Donnegan’s Lexicon was the bridge between the Enlightenment and modern Greek scholarship. This 1844 Philadelphia printing is a heavy, "tome-like" volume that serves as both a serious collector's item and a stunning piece of Victorian-era decor. Whether you are a classicist, a historian, or a lover of fine antiquarian bindings, this book carries a physical weight and history that modern reprints cannot replicate.
