The University of California, Berkeley is a research university founded in 1868 and named after the Anglo-Irish philosopher George Berkeley, it is the state's first land-grant university and the founding campus of the University of California system. The 1960s Berkeley protests were a series of events at the University of California, Berkeley. Many of these protests were a small part of the larger Free Speech Movement, which had national implications and constituted the onset of the counterculture of the 1960s. These protests were headed under the informal leadership of students. (wiki)
