A week after the battle at Bull Run (Manassas) in 1861 union General Irvin McDowell was making plans to secure the area around Washington. Panic from the threat of a Confederate assault on Washington. Such precautions included the construction of forts in a ring around the city. One of those forts was Fort Corcoran (mentioned in orders) which was between Manassas and Washington. In command of that fort Gen. McDowell placed Gen. Wm. T. Sherman. Other various precautions were taken to secure the perimeter around Washington including deployment of skirmishers and artillery.
This original field document includes transcribed orders from various important figures during the Civil War including Gen. McDowell, his Assistant Adjutant General James Fry, Gen. George B. McClellan, Gen. William T. Sherman and mentions others such as General Louis Blenker, Artillery commander Gen. Henry Hunt, and Gen. William B. Franklin.
