The frame of this handsome, original. hexagonal antique mirror is a beautifully-grained solid oak, which is smooth and lovely to touch, and has a rich warm hue. The rear backing of the mirror is wood, on which the original now-rusted hanging fixtures are securely in place.
Around the perimeter of the glass is a bevelled rim 1.5 cm in diameter. As is typical in old mirrors, there are various flaws in the glass, all of which are below the surface; the upper surface of the glass is entirely smooth. There a number of small spots and what look like scratches, where there is some loss of the reflective surface. There are also some brush-like streaks, predominantly around the periphery. I don't know what in the history of the mirror accounts for the latter sub-surface issues. Nevertheless, the mirror is very attractive when hung, despite the glass issues, which are in a good measure redeemed by the beauty of the frame. A replacement bevelled mirror is certainly a viable option. There is some fading on the perimeter edge on a couple of the sections, which could be improved with an application of some medium oak stain.
