An original 5.5x3.5" vintage photo (NOT a modern reprint) from a collection of Sparks Circus photos that were part of a fascinating 1928-1930 scrapbook that we acquired as part of large circus estate lot.

A striking original photograph captures the ornately carved and decorated Grand Stand Ticket Office wagon belonging to Sparks Circus, dated 1930. The wagon is a masterwork of circus wagon artistry, featuring elaborate gilt relief carvings including a central winged eagle with a human face, flanked by a lyre and crossed torches, all framed by richly draped curtains held aside by carved clown or jester figures on each side. Decorative columns with acanthus capitals frame the facade, and the wagon's undercarriage prominently displays the letter "S" for Sparks on the wheel hub. The entire composition reflects the grand showmanship aesthetic of the golden age of the traveling circus.

Sparks Circus - formally known as Sparks World Famous Shows - was a prominent American traveling circus that operated from the early 1900s through the early 1930s. Founded by John H. Sparks, it was one of the larger railroad circuses of its era, competing with Ringling Bros. and other major shows. The 1930 season proved to be one of the final years of the circus's independent operation - the Great Depression hit traveling circuses especially hard, and Sparks Circus ceased operations around 1931-1932, making this photograph a document of the show in its final active season. The elaborately carved wagons of Sparks Circus were among the finest examples of the circus wagon builder's art, and very few survive today.

Print analysis

This appears to be a Type 1 original gelatin silver print, made very close in time to when the photograph was taken in 1930. The photo stock, tonal range, and sepia character of the print are consistent with photographic paper of the late 1920s to early 1930s. The handwritten annotation in white ink on the front ("Sparks / 1930") was likely added at or near the time of printing. The back shows a remnant of aged paper or label material adhered across most of the surface, with a small green stamped number "2" visible in a cleared area. There are no KODAK watermarks visible. This is consistent with a contemporary c1930 original print - Type 1.
