Vintage Japanese Finely Carved Bamboo Wall Decoration:  Cranes and Pine Boughs, 26" tall, Circa 1940-60's

This finely carved tall bamboo wall decoration (26'' tall) features a panel depicting three Red-Crowned Cranes, also known as Japanese Cranes, amidst pine foliage. Two of the cranes appear as a couple on a lower limb while the third is taking flight off an upper limb. The background is overall gouge carved, reminiscent of larger adze marks on the historic hand-hewed beams of homes and barns in Japan.

The details of the cranes, the pine limbs and needle clusters are finely engraved and many are highlighted with a black stain. The traditional naturalistic subject matter is reminiscent of the woodblock prints by such masters as Hokusai. The overall patina is indicative of significant age and the quality of the carving shows the survival of traditional Japanese folk arts through the mid-1900's.

Dimensions: 26" tall, 4-3/8" wide, 1-3/4" deep

Condition: Very Good. No cracks, chips, scratches or repairs. Hanger is intact on the back. There is a nice old patina overall. There are a few paint specks and wear to the black-stained details on the backs of the two lower cranes (see photos).
