This item is a 19th-century cast iron fire mark from the Fire Association of Philadelphia.

Purpose: These plaques were affixed to the fronts of buildings to inform fire brigades that the property was insured by a specific company.

Design: The oval mark features a raised image of an early fire hydrant with a hose attached, flanked by the letters "F" and "A".

Context: Founded in 1817 by volunteer fire and hose companies, this specific design celebrated Philadelphia's public water system.


This is on a wooden base grained wood very nice. The top looks to be craved letters from the wood. The bottom plaque is metal. There is a date of 17th September 1817.
