In October 1991, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's workers began to open 3,100 umbrellas. They were blue in Ibaraki – north of Tokyo - and yellow in California – north of Los Angeles. This work of art reflected the similarities and differences in the lifestyles and the use of the land in two inland valleys.
THE UMBRELLAS – one among many of their fabulous temporary works of art. Their art goes beyond traditional painting and sculpture. They were both born on June 13, 1935 – Christo in Bulgaria and Jeanne-Claude in Casablanca. The met in Paris and became partners in life and began their collaboration creating epic projects. They lived In New York City. Jeanne-Claude died in 2009 and Christo in 2020.
