T. SUGITO Advanced Violin Bow, Japan, 4/4 - Select Pernambuco
Fine bow by Sugito hand crafted in Japan. Equivalent to the current advanced "Sugito Standard-C" model. Round stick is made from beautiful, select Pernambuco wood of rich reddish color. Ebony frog mounted in German silver (nickel alloy) and decorated with a large Parisian eye.
Sugito Bow Company is Japan's number one maker of bows for stringed instruments. Its bows are praised for their flawless craftsmanship, quality materials, and superb playing characteristics. While the company produces a wide range of bow grades -- from student to performing soloist -- even the entry level models are quite expensive, reflecting the Company's reputation and the popularity of its bows.
This bow was made in the late 1980s or early 1990s. During that time, the company was led by Takeshi Sugito (the third generation of the company's leadership), hence the "T. Sugito" branding. This model targeted professional musicians and advanced players and was a big step up from the intermediate models (equivalents of the current Standard-A and Standard-B). For reference, based on the early 2020s catalogues, the list price for the Standard-C model was approximately US$1,650.
The bow has medium stiffness, superb flexibility / bounce, an even draw from tip to frog, and a warm tone.
The bow is properly balanced, with a balancing point of approximately 7.2 inches.
The bow is in very good vintage condition. There is no visible wear on the thumb leather. The hair is in good condition. The wire winding shows wear of the coating from prior cleaning but is tightly wound.
