Where LANY (2017) often felt dreamy and escapist, Malibu Nights is stripped-down, raw, and achingly confessional. Written in the wake of frontman Paul Jason Klein’s highly publicized breakup with pop singer Dua Lipa, the album is essentially a breakup record, one that compresses the stages of grief—denial, anger, heartbreak, and fragile hope—into a concise 9-song, 33-minute journey.
