Engeika began as a humble curator of fine fountain pens--a store dedicated to offering vintage and modern writing instruments with stories embedded in every nib and barrel. We aim to experiment with unique materials--traditional ebonite, modern resins, rare woods, and hand-finished metals--combining them with purposeful designs and thoughtful nib experiences. The JoWo #6 stainless steel nib is a highly regarded option among modern fountain pen users for its durability, smooth writing experience, and consistent performance. Made from high-quality stainless steel, the nib offers a firm and reliable writing experience with excellent feedback control. While it doesn’t offer the natural softness or flex of gold nibs, it excels in resilience and practicality--making it ideal for everyday writing. It resists corrosion, holds its shape well over time, and delivers a clean, even line with most standard inks.
IN-HOUSE CUSTOMIZATION
This customization project was born from a simple but meaningful idea: to create beauty through everyday hands while supporting local households. In Japan, customization has long been a beloved part of hobby culture. From stationery to Gundam models and Tamiya cars, people enjoy repainting, decorating, and reimagining objects they already own. Customization is less about perfection and more about storytelling--about giving an object a new chapter and a renewed sense of life. In this project, local housewives participated directly in the creative process, allowing artistic work to be done within the community while providing support to local households.
The pen bodies are coated using modern lacquer paint rather than traditional Japanese Urushi lacquer. The work is carried out with care and creativity, but without the rigid formality of classical techniques. This choice allows for experimentation and accessibility, making it possible for non-artisans to participate meaningfully in the creation process. Each pen is then decorated using a combination of modern Maki-e stickers and gold, silver, and copper leaf, resulting in a one-of-a-kind surface that reflects both individual expression and collective effort.
MODERN LACQUER PAINT & MODERN MAKI-E STICKERS
Traditional Urushi lacquer and true hand-drawn Maki-e sit at the very top of Japanese decorative arts. Urushi is not simply paint--it is a living material that demands years, often decades, of training to control. Artisans apply layer after layer by hand, carefully curing and polishing each stage in humidity-controlled environments. Every line of Maki-e is drawn freehand with precious metal powders, where a single mistake cannot be undone. The process is slow, demanding, and exacting, but the result is extraordinary depth, durability, and cultural value that can last for generations.This project takes a different path by design. Using modern lacquer paint and contemporary Maki-e style stickers allows for a more playful and expressive approach. The focus is on creativity, experimentation, and enjoyment. These modern methods invite freedom--combining metallic leaf, texture, and bold visuals to create something personal and unexpected. It is not about replacing tradition, but about exploring a lighter, more approachable way to celebrate art, imagination, and individuality.

The piece highlights a striking contrast between a deep, midnight-blue marbled base and the shimmering silver and pearlescent scales of the celestial dragon. These ethereal hues emphasize the creature’s coiled form, creating a sense of dynamic energy that seems to pulse along the barrel as if moving through a starlit sky.
Intricate silver accents and fine metallic dust are scattered across the surface, reminiscent of sea spray or distant galaxies caught in the dragon’s wake. fhas been customized with Lacquer paint by our local housewives. We are not Urushi artisans and this is not an Urushi Lacquer fountain pen. It is a Lacquer paint that we use to decorate this pen adding a new aesthetic and new look. The artwork is done by our local artist.
This pen is a creative experiment and an artistic customization, not a traditional Urushi or artisan Maki-e piece. It is offered as a unique, one-of-a-kind art object meant to be enjoyed for its individuality, community story, and playful exploration of materials.

All our pens are original and authentic because they're sourced directly from the owners of fountain pen collectors, factory owners in the 40s who's sons/daughters have sold their grandparent's fountain pen old stock and hence cant be sourced online. But for an even more detailed description of our pens condition, we have provided a grade tier list to help you determine if this is the pen for you
S Tier - Almost like Brand New: This pen is in exceptional condition, almost as if it were brand new. There are no signs of rust on the clip, and the original filling system is still intact and does not require replacement. The cap and piston filler, if applicable, screw on and off smoothly without any difficulties. The nib color is vivid with limited to no scratches. Any hairline scratches are barely visible, and there are no cracks on the pen. The pen feels smooth, polished, and shiny.
A Tier - Excellent Condition: This pen is in excellent condition with only minor flaws. There may be small chips on the nib, but no rust is present. Hairline scratches may be visible on the body, cap, and nib. The nib color remains consistent, although small scratches may be seen upon close inspection. The pen can be easily screwed on and off, and the filling system works properly. The original filling system is intact with no cracks on the body of the pen. The pen still feels smooth, polished, and shiny.
B Tier - Good Condition: This pen is in good condition and is perfectly usable. It may have some rust on the clip and trim. The nib color may have changed due to weathering or ink stains. The filling system has been replaced with a new one, possibly because the original one had hardened over time and needed replacement. There are no cracks on the pen, but there may be hairline scratches present.
C Tier - Fair Condition: This pen is in fair condition and is functional, but it has noticeable scratches on the body and cap. The trim may be rusted or chipped. Although there are no cracks, the filling system also requires replacement. The nib color may have changed, or the nib itself may have been re-polished.
F Tier - Poor Condition: This pen is still writable, but it is cosmetically in a terrible state. A major refurbishment has been conducted to restore the pen to an acceptable condition, but in the process, many of its original characteristics have been lost.
