Such an annual or perennial herbaceous plant as Osteospermum belongs to the Asteraceae or Compositaceae family. This genus is represented by shrubs and semi-shrubs that can be found in the wild on the territory of the African continent. The name osteospermum is derived from the Greek word, which translates as "bone", as well as from the Latin word meaning "seed". This plant is also called "Cape daisy", "blue-eyed chamomile", "Cape chamomile", "African chamomile", and also "South African chamomile". Osteospermum is called chamomile, because the flowers of the representatives of this genus are superficially similar to the inflorescences of plants belonging to the genus nivanica. Gardeners grow only a few types of osteospermum as ornamental plants.
Osteospermum is an evergreen plant, whose height does not exceed 100 centimeters. As a rule, bushes have erect shoots, but there are also species with creeping stems. The edge of the leaf plates is uneven. The flowers are baskets-inflorescences, the diameter of which is 4-10 centimeters. They consist of ligulate flowers colored purple, pink, yellow, white, purple or orange, as well as central tubular flowers of blue color. Osteospermum differs from other representatives of the Asteraceae family in that its median tubular flowers are sterile (infertile), and the seeds are tied with lingual flowers.
This plant is used to decorate courtyards and flower beds, and they are also grown in tubs and pots. The lush flowering ends only in November. This plant is resistant to heat, short-term drought and slight frost. In the middle latitudes, long-term osteospermum is grown, as a rule, as an annual.
