Note: Krakow-born Lambert-Rucki was a student of the Krakow Fine Arts Academy from 1906 to 1910 and of l'Academie Colarossi in Paris from 1911. He was conscripted during World War I, after which he settled in Montparnasse, where he was associated with other artists of the district: Modigliani, Soutine and fellow Krakovite Moise Kisling. He showed at the Salon d'Autome in 1919, the Salons des Independants from 1920, the Salon des Tuileries from 1933, with the Cubists at the Section d'Or group from 1922-1924, the Galerie l'Effort Moderne from 1927, and the Exhibition de l'Union des Artistes Modernes from 1930 (the first); it was with the latter group he was represented at the Exposition Universelle of 1937. By that time he had been naturalized as a French citizen, and achieved success in numerous fine and decorative art disciplines, chief among them his stylish Art Deco furniture designs in collaboration with Jean Dunand. Lambert-Rucki had personal exhibitions in 1942, 1943, 1952 and 1954 of sculpture and paintings, both heavily influenced by African tribal and primitive art. This influence, as well as his Cubist roots, extended to his many celebrated modern liturgical designs, as is evident in this simple and solemn crucifix.
