Welcome to The Textile Trunk ~ I’ve spent over 25 years collecting antique textiles across Europe, and pieces like this are exactly why I fell in love with this world.

This exceptionally RARE antique French textile fragment dates to circa 1790, printed in Nantes, and comes from the celebrated design “La toilette de Vénus.” The scene shown here depicts Venus attended by figures of love and devotion, arranged beneath rich drapery with finely detailed ground flora and secondary narrative vignettes below. Even as a fragment, the composition remains powerful and beautifully legible. I found a collection of fragments, to view the others simply search my store for the word Venus!

This design is well documented in museum and scholarly references and represents one of the most sophisticated achievements of late 18th-century French textile printing. The original textile was produced using a complex polychrome process, beginning with a black outline printed from a copper plate, followed by additional impressions from woodblocks using multiple mordants and vegetable dyes. Subtle shading was achieved with specialized materials, including cachou, giving the figures depth and softness reminiscent of contemporary engravings.

The imagery reflects the strong Neoclassical influence of the period, inspired by classical antiquity and the renewed interest in ancient themes following discoveries at sites such as Herculaneum. Architectural and symbolic references within the design relate directly to late 18th-century French court culture, including motifs associated with the Temple of Love at Versailles, created for Marie Antoinette just a decade earlier.

This piece is offered as an original fragment, exactly as found, and would be wonderful framed, mounted for study, or displayed as textile wall art. Fragments of documented designs like this are increasingly scarce and highly sought after by collectors, designers, and historians.

I love that these textiles are given new life ~ using and preserving antique materials is one of the most meaningful ways to honor their history, and pieces like this become true antiques of the future, ready to be handed down through generations.
