*The copyright date is: c. 1821 (dating with publisher's address - Cecil Hopkinson's 'Parisian Music Publishers 1700-1950'). This is the earliest 19th century hand colored sheet music print I have seen. Purchased from Nancy Mortimer in England and found inside a bound volume of music dating to this period, much of the music published in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Early images of animals trained to perform are always in high demand. And this one, published in Paris, is really unusual. The gaslights in front add to the surreal image. The dog costumes are wild. Not on World Catalogue, not online as a title with this composer and publisher. One copy located, in Surrey, England. Illustrator unknown. Extremely rare.
