We will select a variety of dimensions to give the overall weight indicated of between 1.7 and 2 kilograms. There will be at least 1 of each species indicated, and no more than 2 of any one species.
LIME Tilia sp. Cream-yellow maturing to yellow-brown/pale brown with a natural lustre. One of the easiest woods to work with for carving. It has straight grain and a fine, even texture, and is also very stable. The timber is perishable and not suitable for exterior work. It has the ability to resist splitting in any cutting direction. Very popular for both beginners and experienced wood carvers alike.
OAK Quercus sp. Traditionally a highly favoured timber for woodcarving. Very dense with a prominent grain. Durable and suitable for external work. The timber is strong and needs to be worked with care. It takes stains and finishes very well.
BEECH Fagus sylvatica Beech is dense with close, regular grain that carves very well. Due to its characteristics, it is often favoured for the carving of kitchen utensils.
TULIPWOOD Liriodendron tulipifera Often called yellow poplar although actually unrelated to the genus Populus. A relatively soft, low density hardwood that is easy to carve. The timber is straight grained and very stable. The wood is generally pale yellow to white, deepening in the heart which can also contain mineral stained colours of green or occasionally dark purple.
UTILE Entandrophragma utile Sometimes referred to as Sipo Mahogany. One of the finest of the African mahogany type timbers. Medium to rich red in colour. Uniform grain with a fine texture that carves and finishes very well.

This timber can be delivered by carrier or collection is possible by arrangement from our works near Eccleshall, Stafford (approximately 9 miles from Junctions 14 or 15 of the M6). The delivery shown is for mainland UK delivery (England, Wales and Scotland excluding highlands). Payment should be via PayPal or cash on collection.
