This appropriately inebriated trio in sepia sporting flushed accenture–with a Falstaffian axis of gargantuan proportions–advertises the premiere of “Panurge,” the bawdy three-act romantic musical farce at the Théâtre lyrique de la Gaîté. “Panurge, based on characters and situations in Rabelais’s Pantagruel, had its premiere eight months after Massenet’s death. The role of Panurge was sung by Vanni Marcoux, that of his wife Colombe by Lucy Arbell. This was Arbell’s final role in a Massenet opera” (French Opera, p. xxiii).
