An expansive view of Tiburon, California by Chinese artist, James Yeh-Jau Liu (1910-2003). Known as (Jimmy Liu), this work was painted by the artist circa 1970. Jimmy Liu lived and worked in Tiburon, California where he had a studio. A Chinese expressionist style painting with a detailed view of the beach and hills of Tiburon .... fog in the background, boats moored on one side of the Tiburon Peninsula and the Golden Gate Bridge, near Sausalito, on the left.
Signed, lower right with a red stamped chop mark. Label on the reverse identifying the artist and with some information. Watercolor and ink on paper. Framed.

NOTES / REFERENCES : James Yeh-Jau (Jimmy) Liu, known as the "Artist Laureate" of Tiburon, California, was born in Hunan Province in China in 1910. Liu graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangchow, China, in 1935. He later rose to the rank of Colonel in the Chinese Army during World War II. After the war, Liu was recruited by Chiang Kai-shek to tour Europe and the United States to help determine the best way to rebuild China. He served as Professor of Painting at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. In 1962, Mr. Liu was invited to teach Chinese Watercolor techniques at San Francisco State University. After retiring at the age of 65 he opened the Han Syi Studio on Main Street, Tiburon. He operated that studio where he sold his paintings until his death in 2003. His works are in public and private collections nationwide, and in China. His works are in the permanent collections of the National Historical Museum of Taiwan, China, and the Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego (now the San Diego Museum of Art).
