These elegant earrings began life as pressed-glass buttons from the 1910s–1920s, later converted into clip earrings around the 1970s, when artisans and collectors revived an appreciation for antique materials and gave them new life as wearable art.
The original buttons are made from black glass with hand-painted silver highlights, typical of the Edwardian to early Art Deco period. The design features intricate looping and interlaced scrollwork, inspired by Celtic knot motifs and the whiplash curves of Art Nouveau, symbolising continuity and craftsmanship. This style was especially popular in the early 20th century, when ornate glass buttons adorned coats, dresses, and mourning garments — offering elegance and texture without the expense of metal or gemstones.
By the 1970s, vintage revivalists began converting antique buttons like these into clip earrings, celebrating their historical charm and bold, sculptural designs. The shanks have been neatly ground down and fitted with secure metal clips, creating a pair that’s both visually striking and steeped in history.
They’re in excellent order, with only a touch of visible adhesive on the reverse from the conversion. Measuring 2.7 cm (1.06 inches) across, these pieces embody over a century of evolving style — from Edwardian refinement to 1970s creativity.
