Historical Context
Issued during the Great Recoinage of 1816, a major reform of British coinage following the Napoleonic Wars.
Represents the Regency period when George III was incapacitated and his son (future George IV) acted as Regent.
The large “bull head” portrait was unpopular and replaced in 1817 with a smaller head design.
The Half Crown was a key silver denomination in pre-decimal currency, valued at 2 shillings and 6 pence (⅛ of a pound).
Demonetized in 1970 ahead of decimalization.
