This is a vintage metal 12" ruler with a calendar, January 1951 to April 1952. It advertises "The Scott Coal Company, Washed & Dust-Proofed Coal, Phone 1141", located at "Quincy & Broadway" in Pittsburg, Kansas. It also has the name "Maynard Angwin" on it. Very interesting!
I did a little research on this, and there is no record (at least on my Google search) of The Scott Coal Company. It said that "it is possible that The Scott Coal Company may have been a very small, independent operator or a coal distribution yard rather than a mining company. These types of small businesses often didn't leave extensive historical records. However, given the nature of the industry and trends in Pittsburg during the 1950s, it is unlikely to have been a significant coal producer at that time. By the 1950s, underground coal mining had largely ceased in the Pittsburg area, and the industry had transitioned to large-scale strip mining."
I did a search on the name Maynard Angwin, and found that he was a prominent businessman in Pittsburg, Kansas with ties to the Kansas State College of Pittsburg, Pittsburg State University.
***We would love to see someone with ties to any of these amazing places or people end up with this very cool piece of Kansas history!
