Efraim Modzelevich, painter, born 1931, Buenos
Aires, Argentina.
Born in 1931, Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Polish parents, and
immigrated to Israel in 1939, at the age of 8.
Died in 1995.
Modzelevich began painting in childhood.
Studies
1950-51 with Avraham Yaskil and Zvi Mairovich, Haifa;
1959-60 advanced studies, Paris.
He
achieved at an early age a distinguished style and reputation which brought him
a solo exhibition in Tel Aviv at the age of 25, and many exhibitions thereafter
in Israel, New York, and Paris.
He also participated in group exhibitions in Israel and aboard and in 1958 won
the Milo Artists' Club prize in Tel Aviv.
From 1964 had
independent studio, ''Kedem'', in Old Jaffa.
Many of his paintings have been acquired by museums in Israel and abroad as
well as by art collectors in the U.S.A, England, France and Israel.
Efraim Modzelevich was a highly gifted colorist with well-developed sense of
composition. He used abstract means of expression, but he did not cut himself
off from the appearance of things as they are in nature. He has found the
golden mean between reality and abstraction.

Twenty-two years have passed since the death of
the important artist Ephraim Modzelevich, who was a gifted colourist and a
well-developed composer.
His paintings attest to a refined taste and musical
sensitivity in the orchestration of the colors. Although he used
abstract means of expression, he avoided completely disengaging from the
manifestations of nature. Modzelevitch did not have transitions from one style to
another. He
created in a way close to himself, knowing very well what he had before him. It is felt that
it expresses our climate in its way and succeeds in reaching a poetic and
profoundly deep approach to the urban landscape.
We met his wife Anna
Modzelevich, who has lived with him for over 30 years for an interview about
him.
Anna, when Ephraim first
began painting:
Ephraim was born in
Argentina and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1939. He began painting
since the school days.
Anna, wrote about some of the most important exhibitions
that Ephraim presented:
In the mid-1950s Ephraim
presented a solo exhibition at the Katz Gallery, which was perhaps the
well-known gallery in Tel Aviv.
In 1962 he exhibited a
solo exhibition at the Helena Rubinstein Museum in Tel Aviv.
In the years 1959 to
1961, Modzelevitch traveled to Paris, where he exhibited in solo exhibitions
that were very successful.
What
artists were close to him?
In 1962 he was invited
as a young artist by the group "New Horizons." The artist Joseph
Zaritsky, who was close to him, advised him to travel to Paris, which was
considered by many artists to be the center of abstract and modern painting.
Was
Ephraim influenced by any artists throughout the years of his work?
At the beginning of his
career, in his 20s, he was a student of the famous artist Zvi Meirovich who had
a great influence on his works. In "Ofakim Hadashim" Efraim became friendly with
the artist Yosef Zaritsky. He is also very
much influenced by Viera De Silva, an international Brazilian artist whose
foundations are: the space, the elements and the small shapes that spread
through space as seen in many works by Ephraim.
Tell me
about his latest work hanging in your house?
The last piece he worked
on is a painting with a red background and touches of colorful flowers in
space. This work is completely different from his familiar line, as
if he thought of a new breakthrough, but unfortunately this was his last work
because he died the next day.
Tell me about life beside
him and about the person behind the artist 'Ephraim Modzelevich'
Ephraim was a man with a
unique and rich personality, he was a man and a friend of a different kind. A person with a
conversational culture with a very broad understanding of various subjects and
who would magnetize people around him. He was a witty man with wide horizons,
optimistic about life and a developed sense of humor.
I have been with him for
over thirty years and it was a great privilege for me. As an artist, he was an
autodidact, but his sensitivity and inner intelligence, which characterizes his
character, pushed him to shape his world by unconventional means that sometimes
deviated from the usual trends in the artistic movement of the time.
Anna relates that when
Efraim was asked what the art of painting was for him, he wrote:
"As a painter, the
manuscript is the writing of the brain and emotion that carries with it a load
of energies that we absorb and transmit on the canvas and create a new life and
a different framework."
"It is important to
note," adds Anna, "that Modzelevich took part in a unique project
with visionary aspects: After the work on the opening of Old Jaffa was
completed, my husband was the first artist and gallerist to renovate his home
facing the sea. The western house in Jaffa in the "Kedem Gallery" was
known at the time in the Israeli art world, and the house in Jaffa and the
surrounding area combined with the urban landscape with the stone houses and
boats at sea influenced it and constituted its subjects.
