This vintage page photo captures the aftermath of Bobby Thomson’s legendary “Shot Heard ’Round the World” on October 3, 1951, at the Polo Grounds. In the ninth inning of the decisive playoff game, Thomson’s three-run home run off Ralph Branca gave the New York Giants the pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Here, Giants manager Leo Durocher is being held back by Ed Stanky as he tries to join the players on the field, while Thomson trots jubilantly around third base. This moment remains one of the most dramatic and iconic finishes in baseball history, a defining image of postwar baseball and Giants lore.
