Meerschaum is a very specialised form of clay and chemically is known as anhydrous magnesium silicate. The geological conditions necessary for its formation occur in only two known regions of the earth's surface. East Africa and Asia Minor, although deposits of a closely allied material, sepiolite are scattered extensively in several continents.

The African deposits were laid down some one million years ago by volcanic action and in a plastic state filled cavities and interstices in the host rock, limstone and over hundreds of thousands of years solidified into its present form.

The name 'meerschaum' is of German origin and when translated becomes 'sea foam' in English. As it is one of the most porous materials to be found in nature it will float on water when dry - hence sea foam. These qualities, porosity and lightness give it the distinction of being the best possible tobacco smoking medium. Add to these attributes the fact that meerschaum, because of its nature unlike wooden pipes cannot burn out.

At the factory the raw material is cut into various sizes depending on the shape of pipe to be made and emerges as a finished pipe after some sixty operations nearly all of which are carried out by highly skilled craftsmen. It can be truthfully claimed that your BELT is virtually hand made.

The Belt which is calcined is made in one shape which as all pipe smokers are aware is possibly the most popular design.It comes in smooth finish which is complemented by the silver mount. During all stages of manufacture the greatest care is taken to ensure that your pipe reaches you in perfect condition.
