Bob Marley (6 Feb 1945-11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer, considered a pioneer of popular reggae music. Blending elements of reggae, ska & rocksteady with a smooth, distinctive vocal & song writing style, his music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide & made him a global figure in pop culture. Forming the band Bob Marley & the Wailers, debut album The Wailing Wailers ('65) features the single One Love/People Get Ready, which hit the Top 5 on worldwide music charts. While initially employing louder instrumentation & singing, they began engaging in rhythmic-based song construction in the late '60s-early '70s, which coincided with the singer's conversion to Rastafarianism. Their musical shift was typified with album The Best of The Wailers ('71). They attained international success after albums Catch a Fire, & Burnin' (both '73) & forged a reputation as touring artists. Disbanding in ’74, Marley went on to release his solo material under the band's name. His debut album Natty Dread ('74) received acclaim, as did its follow-up Rastaman Vibration ('76). Marley survived an assassination attempt in Jamaica in '76, prompting him to relocate to the UK. There he recorded the album Exodus ('77); it incorporated elements of blues, soul & British rock, enjoyed commercial success & is considered 1 of the best albums of all time. Marley became known as a Rastafari icon & sought to infuse his music with a sense of spirituality. He is considered a global symbol of Jamaican culture & identity. Marley was controversial in his outspoken support for the legalization of marijuana, while he also advocated for Pan-Africanism. In '77 he was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma & passed away in '81. Fans around the world expressed their grief & he received a state funeral in Jamaica. He was posthumously honored by Jamaica soon after his death, with the nation's Order of Merit award. The greatest hits album Legend ('84) subsequently became the best-selling reggae album of all-time. Marley is 1 of the best-selling music artists of all-time, with over 75 million records sold!
