Etching with watercolor tinting on paper

8 × 10 in image, 16 × 20 in framed

A winding path leads through red-roofed houses nestled together in the medieval heart of Brugge. Beyond the rooftops, hints of canal walls and chimney stacks suggest the dense yet quiet neighborhoods of the historic Flemish city. The scene is captured with warmth and intimacy, celebrating European village life.

The precision of Lee’s etched lines and the warmth of his watercolor application evoke both a mapmaker’s clarity and a traveler’s reverence. The compact composition draws the viewer into a lovingly rendered world of stillness and structure.

Milton Keith Lee (1927–2003) was an Oklahoma-born artist who worked and exhibited in California. His hand-colored etchings depict idyllic European and Californian towns and are prized for their harmony of detail and atmosphere. Village is typical of his Brugge-inspired scenes from the 1980s.
