Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova, Russian (1881-1962) was a Russian artist known for her Futurist paintings. Dealing with religious, political, and societal themes, the artist made an eclectic body of work incorporating Cubism, Asian art, and Russian folk art.
Ballet Lithurgie is a referencing of traditional Russian religious iconography .
She designed this costume for a Ballets Russes commission that was never produced. The company’s artists who remained with founder Sergei Diaghilev at the outbreak of World War I in 1914 decamped to Switzerland.
