Practical applications of tung wood panels
1. Furniture manufacturing
Advantages: Lightweight and durable, suitable for making cabinets, bookshelves, wardrobes and other furniture, especially those that need to be moved or space-saving.
Examples: tung wood wardrobes, light desks, children's furniture (due to light weight and safety).
Note: Due to its low hardness, it is not suitable to bear heavy loads and is often used as decorative or auxiliary furniture.
2. Musical Instrument Making
Advantages: good resonance properties of tung wood, clear sound, light weight, easy to carve.
Examples: Guitar back and side panels (commonly used in high-grade handcrafted guitars), traditional musical instruments (e.g. parts of erhu or guqin).
3. Packaging and cases
Advantages: lightweight, corrosion-resistant, suitable for making packaging that needs to protect items.
Examples: Tea boxes, cigarette cases, wine crates, craft boxes (especially in Asian markets).
Characteristics: Tung wood crates are often used for high-end goods and can be stored for longer periods of time due to their natural preservative properties.
4. Architecture and Decoration
Advantages: Easy to work with, beautiful grain, suitable for interior decoration.
Examples: wall panelling, suspended ceilings, door frames, flooring (light use), furniture veneers.
Note: Due to its low hardness, it is not suitable as the main load-bearing structural material and is usually used in combination with hardwood.
5. Crafts and Models
Advantages: easy to carve, light weight, suitable for handmade.
Examples: wood carving works of art, model aeroplanes, boat models, children's handmade toys.
Characteristics: The flexibility of tung wood makes it excellent in fine carving.
6. Agriculture and Horticulture
Advantages: rot-resistant, suitable for light outdoor use.
Examples: flower pot trays, greenhouse frames, seedling support frames.
Characteristics: The natural insect resistance of tung makes it perform well in environments with high humidity.
Considerations for practical applications
Strength limitations: The low hardness of tung (Janka hardness of about 300-400 lbf) makes it unsuitable for furniture or building components that require high load bearing. It is recommended to use it in combination with hardwoods (e.g. oak).
The wood is sanded and polished free of burrs, but not oiled.
