3M 5413 KAPTON POLYIMIDE FILM TAPE, 5.00” WIDE, SOLD BY THE FOOT

3M 5413 KAPTON POLYIMIDE DESCRIPTION

3M 5413 Polyimide Kapton is a flexible film tape renown for its high temperature resistance, flexibility and excellent insulation properties.  3M 5413 utilizes a silicone adhesive that can stick to even the most challenging surfaces (low surface energy substrates). 3M 5413 requires very little pressure for it to attach and when removed, it won’t leave behind any residue. Because of its reliability and safety, 3M 5413 is frequently used in aerospace applications, automotive applications, medical devices and electronic devices. 3M 5413 is primarily used for masking and protecting components on printed circuit boards during manual or automated soldering. However, given 5413’s resistance to high-temperatures, chemicals, UV and even radiation it has a vast array of other applications. Use 3M 5413 as the build platform for your 3D printer as it provides a stable and durable heat resistant surface. Since 3M 5413 has ridiculously high resistance (50 Mega Ohms), it’s perfect for electrical insulating applications: transformer coils, capacitors, circuit boards and even plain old wire & cable splicing. 3M 5413’s silicone adhesive leave no residue when removed, so it’s an ideal release surface for fabricating parts cured at elevated temperatures and for masking components during powder coating. 3M 5413 works well in extreme environments like aerospace, so it can also mask components during vacuum deposition. While 3M 5413 can burn, it’s actually self-extinguishing – even if it catches fire, only the surface level of the tape is charred. This is why 3M 5413 is widely used in aerospace where fire=bad.

Yes, 3M adhesive products are indeed expensive. A full length roll of 3M 5413 in this width will set you back about $800. Buying a full roll of 3M 5413 shouldn’t require cashing in your 401K. We sell this width of 3M 5413 by the foot, so you can buy just what you need and not get “rolled”.

3M 5413 KAPTON POLYIMIDE ACTUAL USE IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

The New Horizons Spacecraft: uses Kapton to keep its electronic temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. The ship could travel more than 3 billion miles (i.e., to Pluto) thanks to Kapton. Kapton ensures the electronic temperatures don't spike or lower, allowing the vessel to run smoothly.

The James Webb Space Telescope: In an aluminized form, Kapton makes up the sun shield of the James Webb Space Telescope.
