Did you know, Boyds Bears, a popular line of stuffed and resin teddy bears, was founded in 1984 by Gary and Tina Lowenthal in Boyds, Maryland. The company's roots lie in their antique shop, where they eventually began producing and selling antique reproductions. The first Boyds Bear, a 12-inch stuffed bear with moveable joints, was named after their son Matthew. The bears became known as "Boyds Bears" after their location in Boyds, Maryland. 

In 1987, the company relocated to McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, near Gettysburg, to accommodate growth and access better labor markets. Boyds Bears and their expanding line of hares, moose, and cats became hugely popular, leading to the creation of a large store in Pennsylvania that was known as "Boyds Bear Country". 

The company faced challenges and eventually closed its store in 2011 and the business itself in 2014. Enesco, the parent company, acquired Boyds Bears in 2008, and the line was retired in 2014 before being relaunched in 2024. Boyds Bears remain a popular collector's item, particularly those from the 1990s and early 2000s.
