By the time Rock Steady was released on December 11, 2001, No Doubt had already cemented themselves as one of the most unique and successful bands of the late ’90s. Their breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom (1995), had transformed them from Orange County ska-punk underdogs into global superstars, with hits like "Don't Speak" and "Just a Girl" dominating the charts. While its follow-up, Return of Saturn (2000), was more introspective and experimental, it didn’t quite match the massive success of its predecessor.
