This tribute to the Norwegian black metal originators has some of the bigger black and death metal acts covering Mayhem's big songs. Before listening to this album I've viewed Mayhem as a controversial band with the music not really being the focus, but a medium to spread their message. But after hearing this album I got to respect the actual music more. The best songs are found in the beginning of the album with covers by Immortal, Dark Funeral, Vader, Emperor, and Behemoth. The rest of the songs are a little less produced but you can say they are closer to the black metal sound. There are plenty of blast beats and layered tremolo picking, as well as plenty of blasphemous growling all over the album. It was enjoyable hearing the bigger black/death metal bands paying tribute to the originators.
