Gold-plated pieces are created by bonding an extremely thin layer of gold over a base material such as copper or brass.  Gold content is usually less than 1%.  Sometimes the item may be stamped "925" that means the gold is layered over silver.  This is sometimes called Vermeil.

The measurement of 22 length includes the base of the hook to the loop farthest away on the eye. There is a very small hole at the end of the hook to attach design.
