Original ink drawing made in Corcoran State Prison in California in 2024 by Joe Chavez, an inmate who has been incarcerated most of his life, but is working on regaining his freedom. Artwork is unsigned.
Very detailed drawing using both line drawing and gradation techniques.
Drawing is in black and purple ink on drawing paper. Image depicts a Chicana woman with many tattoos, including an iguana, skulls, masks, a smoking gun, and a memorial "R. I. P." Tattoo of a homeboy. She is holding a miniature puppet like figure of a conquistador. To the top right is Mictlantecuhtli (Lord of the Dead) wearing a featherwork shawl and and traditional shoes. In the background is the image of what appears to be a warrior wearing a nose ring. On the top left and the top right are double-headed serpents "coatli". Mid-center to the right in the background is an image of Death holding a sickle. In the forefront bottom right the main woman with the tattoos is holding a skull bearing the image of the sun "Tonalli" on its forehead.
