This listing is for the original oil painting signed "Dowling" that you see in the photos. I purchased it at an estate sale in Oregon where I was not told its history. It appears to me to be old enough to have possibly been painted in the 1970's if not earlier. I leave it to the buyer to decide when and where it was painted and who painted it.
I purchased a second painting at the sale that was also signed, "Dowling". Some writing on the reverse of that painting indicates that the artist was a "R Dowling" so I am thinking R Dowling painted this painting.
The style looks to me like the Martin Heade paintings of orchids and hummingbirds that I have found on the internet. Martin Johnson Heade (August 11, 1819 – September 4, 1904) was a prominent American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes, and still-life paintings. Particularly, those featuring tropical birds and flowers.
The frame measures close to 22 by 18 by 1 1/2 inches. The area of the painting exposed by the frame measures close to 17 ⅜ by 13 ⅜ inches. The framed painting weighs close to 4 pounds 5 ounces. The painting appears and feels like it is painted on some kind of wooden board. The painting might be older than the frame.
The condition is much like you see it in the photos. The painting and frame might benefit from a cleaning. The fabric lining on the frame looks lightly soiled and there are two water stain on it. The painting is in excellent condition . The paper backing is a little damaged and stained. It looks like at one time that there were some identifying labels on the back that are no longer there. There are a few minor signs of use on the wooden part of the frame. Two close-ups show the two signs of use that are much more noticeable than the other ones. Otherwise, painting and frame are fine and as shown.
I guarantee this painting to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. I allow three business days for shipping, but I usually ship the same or next day if possible. Please note that the lighting in my photos is uneven, and there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors; different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs "approximately" because no measurements are exact, and some things are difficult to measure.
I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. I sometimes purchase signature delivery for my more valuable packages because of the possibility of them being stolen off of a porch or damaged by weather. I often, but not always, ship the same or next day. Often, I have a double-walled box custom made for larger items, which might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually made from biodegradable materials.
Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends, and I might not be available to answer emails on weekends.
