DESCRIPTION

A limited edition of two hundred and fifty copies, of which this is numbered one hundred and sixty four. 

Illustrated with a frontispiece, four plates, and in-text engravings.

Collated, complete.

An exploration of the life and work of Thomas Bewick, the famed wood engraver.

Bewick is best known for his writing and illustrating two work of natural history, 'A General History of Quadrupeds', and 'A History of British Birds', alongside illustrating editions of Aesop's 'Fables' throughout his life. He is considered to be the founder of wood engraving, as his works were pioneering in the medium.

Written by the art dealer and critic David Croal Thomson. He was the editor of the 'Art journal' from 1892 to 1902.


CONDITION

In the original publisher's cloth, repaired to the head and tail of the spine, with renewed endpapers. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to my extremities. Small dampstains to the rear board. Light marks and rubbing to the cloth. Small tear to the tail of the rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages.
