The competition was Joachim Löw’s first as the manager of the national side, only to be denied silverware by a Fernando Torres goal that saw Spain run out 1-0 winners and crowned champions. The German’s sealed second place in Group B after a final game showdown with Austria, running out 1-0 winners thanks to a blistering long-range free-kick from Michael Ballack. Victory over Portugal in the last eight was followed by a dramatic 90th minute Phillip Lahm winner against Turkey in the Semi-Finals to secure a first final in the competition since 1996.
