American Memorial Park honors the sacrifices of American military personnel and Island residents involved in the WWII Marianas Campaign. The island of Saipan was deemed necessary as a base for American bombers to strike mainland Japan. The battle to overthrow the Japanese at Saipan proved significant and an estimated 25% of American forces were killed in taking the island.
